Our Story |
|
In the late 1980’s a group of missions-hearted people from Immanuel Baptist Church began praying and exploring what God might want to do to reach people for Jesus in the growing southeast area of Lexington. The Southeast Lexington Baptist Mission began in April 1988 and met in the Lexington Ice Center. In 1990, land for a future church building on Armstrong Mill Road was purchased by Immanuel Baptist Church. The mission continued to meet in the Ice Center for worship and added space in local office buildings for church offices, Sunday School and weekday meetings. On October 4,1992, Victory Baptist Church was constituted with 77 charter members and called Rev. Coye Still as first full-time pastor a few months later. In September, 1993, ground was broken for a new church facility on the Armstrong Mill property. After months of construction and volunteer labor by many church members, Victory held its first services there in June, 1994. As the church continued to grow through the late 1990’s, additional property (the Bradley House) was purchased, more parking was constructed and ministries were expanded. In June of 1999, Dr. Mike James was called as pastor. The church grew rapidly in the early years of the new millennium, with many people coming to the Lord and ministry staff being added. Special ministries and missions have marked the church’s expanding ministry impact. A special July 4th event, complete with fireworks, is Victory’s gift to the community each summer. The Great May-Day Giveaway helps us share God’s generous heart with the needy in our community. Victory teams regularly serve meals at the Hope Center, a local homeless shelter. An Alcoholics Anonymous chapter meets at the church each week. Short-term mission teams have served in Costa Rica, Oneida, KY and other places. Beginning with disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina, Victory sent several teams to help the people of Grand Isle, Louisiana, and the Baptist church there. Victory has maintained a special heart for church planting. From 2004-2007, we served as the sponsoring church for Master’s Church, a high-impact church plant in the Masterson Station area of Lexington. Today, we are the primary partner with Mosaic Church in Versailles, Kentucky. In 2007, Pastor David Head began his ministry as lead pastor. Today, the church has about 450 members and continues to make a God-sized impact in southeast Lexington and beyond. |
